 Missouri
Military Academy, or MMA, is my alma mater, and
Gavin is now in his junior year.
MMA is a very prestigious
private school located in the town of Mexico in
central Missouri. Founded in 1889, MMA has
a very distinguished history. While not
always, the Cadet Corps has almost always
achieved the highest designation from the Army
of "Honor Unit with Distinction". And in 1985,
my graduating class, the school was recognized
by the Department of Education as an
"Exemplary Private School". This honor was
bestowed on only 65 of the 22,000 private
schools operating in the U.S., and MMA was the
only military school on the list.
The schools motto - "Look
like a Soldier, Act like a Gentleman, Study like
a Scholar" - sums up nicely why parents have
made the difficult decision to send their sons
away to school for 116 years. It's difficult
every fall, Christmas, and spring when we have
to take Gavin back to the airport to return to
